Disney is looking to win back young boys in the marketing battle

Disney really has a lot of girls going crazy over Hannah Montana, the Jonas Brothers, Pixie Hollow. But where are young boys in their marketing. This New York Times article “Disney Expert Uses Science to Draw Boy Viewers” talks about how they hired a team of anthropologists to get inside the heads of boys between the ages of 6-12.

Can we in education learn from this?
Do we want young boys to read more?
What should they be reading?

If you are looking to hire a person and you look on their Facebook account and learn that they belong to a group ” I Pee My Pants When I’M Drunk” what does that tell you about this candidate. Ignoring the obvious it tells Susan Zvacek, director of instructional development at University of Kansas that this student is technologically illiterate.

Kids spend more time with media than with family!

No surprise. A recent report from the Kaiser Family Foundation Generation M2: Media in the Lives of 8- to 18-Year-Olds found that with technology allowing nearly 24-hour media access as children and teens go about their daily lives, the amount of time young people spend with entertainment media has risen dramatically, especially among minority youth.

This post talks about UK and how it is rethinking accountability through standardized testing.

“UK testing program (is) a “crude” way to assess learning, one that has had “unintended effects” such as narrowing the curriculum.”
